Tallow
Tallow is rendered beef suet — the dense, pristine fat found around a cow’s kidneys.
We source fresh set locally from pasture-raised cattle on Vancouver Island. Then we dry-render it slowly in small batches, heating it gently to separate the pure fat from any tissue. This traditional method preserves the tallow's natural nutrients and purity.
The result is a clean, stable, nutrient-dense tallow with a long shelf life — ready to be whipped into skincare that nourishes your skin.
Tallow has a lipid profile similar to the oils our skin naturally produces, which helps support the skin’s natural barrier and reduce moisture loss.
It also contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with fatty acids that contribute to healthy skin structure and lipid balance.
Most moisturizers rely on water-based formulas and synthetic ingredients for short-term relief from dryness. Bœuf is different. It's an oil-based formula made with simple ingredients, designed to seal in moisture so skin stays soft and protected for longer.
Tallow is generally well tolerated by many skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin. On the comedogenic scale it's considered low to moderately comedogenic, meaning it’s less likely to clog pores compared with heavier oils and butters (like coconut oil for example).
Skin responses are individual, however. If you’re acne-prone or highly sensitive, we recommend patch testing first to ensure compatibility.
High-quality, dry-rendered tallow has little to no scent. Before any botanical oils or essential oils are added, some batches may carry a faint buttery note that dissipates once blended.
Tallow’s consistency can change with temperature fluctuations. In colder conditions it may become more firm; in warmer weather it can soften or melt. These natural variations don’t affect its quality.
If your whip feels firm, warm a small amount between your fingers before applying. If it softens or melts, place it in the fridge for 10–15 minutes to let it set again.
A light graininess can occasionally occur if the whip gets very cold or freezes — this is normal and will melt smoothly as you massage it into your skin.
If you have questions about the consistency of your whip, please reach out and we'll guide you through bringing it back to its ideal texture.
To keep it at its best, use clean dry hands, keep the lid tightly closed between uses, and avoid introducing water into the jar. Store in a cool, dry place.
With proper care, your Bœuf product will stay fresh and effective for up to one year from purchase.
Tallow is naturally stable, and because our products contain no water, they have a long shelf life without synthetic preservatives. We add vitamin E and rosemary extract as antioxidants to protect the more delicate botanical and essential oils.
